JOHN KING & CO.

This ride is all about witnessing the beauty of the Mekong River, standing in the shadows of ancient lost temples and experiencing some of the best trail riding Asia has to offer. We’ll camp on a river island, spot the rare Irrawadee river dolphin and boat over to a Laos village for breakfast. We then turn west, riding up to a spectacular mountain top temple on the Thailand / Cambodia border and visit multiple other ancient remote temples sites, lost in the jungle of central Cambodia. As for the trails – we’ll ride rocky hills, open sandy tracks, bumpy dirt roads, twisting jungle singletrack, river crossings… just about every type of terrain going!

We will organise a tour of the capital city and it’s surrounding areas, giving you the chance to learn about Cambodia’s dark history. Visit the S21 Genocide Museum, the Killing Fields, the bustling Russian Market or even test your aim at the shooting range. In the afternoon you will receive a full briefing of the trip ahead over a few cold beers, followed by a meal at a quality riverfront restaurant.

Accommodation will be in a quality hotel with a pool.

We’ll swiftly leave the chaos of Phnom Penh behind us, crossing the mighty Mekong river on a local ferry. We’ll then head north, following alongside the river all the way up to the riverside town of Kampong Cham. We’ll ride on a mix of dirt and tarmac roads with some options for trails along the way. We finish the day by riding across a 1km bridge made entirely out of bamboo!

Accommodation will be in a riverside hotel.

Sticking to the side of the Mekong river we will continue north, passing through small villages and fishing communities. We’ll then say goodbye to the Mekong for now and cut East – we’ll meet the river again when we reach the Laos border! Today we will ride a great mix of easy riverside trails, bumpy dirt roads and smooth highway through rubber plantations.

Accommodation will be in a town hotel with AC.

Today we have the option for some technical off road riding on the old ‘King’s Highway’ or we can stick to the highway and cruise the winding roads up into the mountains. The King’s highway offers an exciting mix of open sandy trails and tighter singletrack up into the hills. In the afternoon you’ll have the option to visit the elephant sanctuary or the stunning 3-stage Bou Sra waterfall.

Accommodation will be in wooden bungalows on a hillside.

Passing through the Mondulkiri province we’ll ride along parts of the old ‘Death Highway’ – offering a mix of dirt tracks, sandy & muddy trails and rivers. A brilliant days riding that lands us in the beautiful Ratanakiri province.

Accommodation will be in a hillside bungalow resort with a pool.

We start the day by riding a winding dirt road until we reach our first boat crossing of the day. After refreshing with a cold coconut we’ll board the wooden boat and chug over to the other side where the trails await. 35km of amazing trail that wind through the jungle, cross through rivers and pass through remote villages. We cross another two rivers on wooden boats before reaching the end of the trail. Back on dirt road, we cruise back towards the Mekong River. We’ll load our bikes onto another wooden boat that we will have called in – this will take us 15 minutes up the river to Preah Rumkel where our campsite and BBQ awaits!

Accommodation will be in tents on our private river island.

We’ll hop on a small boat and chug over to Laos for breakfast (no customs involved!), spotting the rare Irrawadee River Dolphins on the way. It’s then back to Cambodia to jump back on the bikes to cruise the winding dirt roads over to the Mekong river rapids – a truly spectacular sight. We will then say goodbye to the river and ride the dirt roads west. We’ll finish the day by riding 50km of awesome winding trails through fields and forests.

Accommodation is in a town guesthouse.

This morning we ride steep winding roads up to the spectacular mountain top temple of Preah Vihear, situated right on the Cambodia/Thailand border. We will then cruise back down the mountain and head south towards the remote temple site of Koh Ker. The days riding gives options of tarmac or dirt roads and a vast array of winding trails.

Accommodation will be in a remote guesthouse, offering a rooftop view over the jungle canopy.

This morning we will ride dirt roads and tracks through beautiful scenic villages. It’s then onto the trails for a cracking afternoon of trail riding through forests, rivers and fields. We’ll arrive at our village homestay in the late afternoon with enough time to take a coolbox of cold beers over to the spectacular Preah Khan temple for sunset.

Accommodation will be in a village homestay.

Today we ride Cambodia’s very own ‘Route 66‘ an ancient Angkorian temple that connects the city of Angkor to the ancient Preah Khan temple. Now, the highway has deteriorated into awesome trails through the jungle. There are still remains of the old bridges hidden away in the undergrowth. We will have lunch outside the front of Beng Mealea temple before continuing on the trails to Siem Reap. We’ll finish up by slowing the pace right down and riding narrow dirt roads through some beautiful Cambodian villages lined with palm trees.

Accommodation will be in a centrally located hotel with a pool.

  • Dry Season

Trails: After the wet season, the mud sticks around in places until late November / December (depending on how extreme the wet season has been). The trails then dry up and, in certain areas, become quite sandy. So, if you like your mud and exciting river crossings: November is the best month to visit; if you like your sand: March/April; for everything in between, December – February.

Dirt roads: If you’re opting for the easier road options, a visit any time in dry season is suitable for this route. Just bare in mind that December – February are the cooler months, and the conditions become more and more dusty as we go through the season.

    Wet Season

Trails: As the rains start to arrive, the sandy tracks are compacted – first turning into excellent wet sand providing plenty of grip, and then turning into mud. If you’re an experienced rider and do not mind getting caught in the occasional downpour, the wet season might be the best time for you to visit… the varying conditions provide some more challenging riding and exciting river crossings. Bare in mind that wet season conditions can be unpredictable and sometimes extreme… vast areas might become flooded and we may be calling in the help of local wooden boats if we cannot make it through. A sense of adventure is a must!

Dirt roads: The early wet season does provide suitable conditions and the rains help to keep the dust down. However, the late wet season is not the ideal time to be cruising along the highways or dirt roads. The rains will be cold when cruising along at speed and the dirt roads turn to deep mud.
