Hello everyone out there in email land and welcome to our first winter newsletter.
The temperature has dropped quicker than the resale value on a Chinese dirt bike, and in the UK at least, the joy of winter riding and smashing through frozen puddles is back on the agenda. Of course in Australia it’s probably about 40 degrees and hot enough to fry an egg on your clutch cover, but for us in Blighty, cold is here to stay.
But enough of the weather, what’s been happening in our global operation this month?
LONG DAYS IN LAOS
With our first Laos to Vietnam tour due to kick off in January with only three places left, it was time for the Ride Expeditions to fine tune the route and check the accommodation. Toby drafted in our resident writer and off-road addict Julian for the journey, the two of them landing in Laos at the end of October. Riding the 1600 km route in half the time it will take on the tour, the boys had their work cut out, clocking up an impressive 485km mostly off road on the first day alone, battling everything from jungle leeches to fallen trees. OK so it wasn’t all hard work, and testing the infinity pools at the hotels and sampling the local beer certainly sweetened the deal.
“The scenery on this tour is simply stunning” said Julian from the poolside bar. “Laos is such an unexpectedly beautiful country. And Vietnam was no different – this tour and the trails we will be riding are mind-blowing. Oh and riding thorough the traffic in Hanoi – it’s life affirmingly mad, brilliant, scary and unbelievable all at the same time”.Julian
If you hurry you might just get a place for January, but don’t worry if not. There are so many possibilities in these two countries we will be placing even more tours on the calendar.
We’ll be posting a report on the pre-ride on the website so watch this space.
Straight after leaving Vietnam, the Ride Expeditions team touched down in Phnom Penh to meet up with the customers for our North East Adventurer tour. After a couple of days sightseeing in the city, Aussies Aaron, Adam, Andrew, Brenton, Clinton and Matt, Ex Pat Doug and Swedes Magnus and Lars set off on a mammoth 1600 km tour of the country, taking on everything from drowned forests to sweeping dirt roads that stretched on as far as you could see. With the country experiencing a late running rainy season, sometimes the going got pretty damn taxing but the boys fought through with the help of Toby, Lead rider Vut and the team of mechanics and medics that travelled with them.
With everything from small guesthouses to five star hotels and jungle lodges on nature reserves on the accommodation list, there was plenty of time for R & R, and the lads even went swimming in a volcanic lake. Now that’s a pretty good holiday..
We even got to take in the delights of Siem Reap’s infamous Pub Street at the end of the tour, and ever the professional, Julian was still cutting up the dance floor with the Aussies at 3.30 AM.
So with all the bike-based stuff going on, Toby and Anna also had time over the summer to start planning another string to the Ride Expeditions bow. Although Anna can hold her own on a bike, her preference for a day out is more four hooves than two wheels. So a trip to Rajasthan to check out the possibilities for horse riding expeditions is the first stage of this plan, with both Toby and Anna busting the trails on the beautiful Marwari horses that are unique to the region.
The plan has all kinds of advantages for bike riders in terms of getting their card stamped, allowing partners the possibilities of experiencing a similar tour. It’s early days for this yet, but Anna is a very determined person …
Looking ahead, Ride Expeditions will be exhibiting at the MCN Motorcycle Show in London. It’s the first time we’ve done a show, so we’re planning to go big at Excel for the show. Big screens, bikes, show discounts, stickers, T-shirts and dancing girls. OK we lied about the dancing girls but there’ll be enough to look at for sure. The show runs 17 – 19th February, so book it off in the diary and come and say hi to the team. More updates to follow chaps.
That’s all for now – so close the laptop and go get filthy..
