HIMALAYAN MOTORCYCLE TOUR ITINERARY

DAY 1: WELCOME TO INDIA!

We’ll meet you at the airport in New Delhi and bring you to your hotel – ideally located, it is the perfect base from which to explore this chaotic city (yes, the traffic is INSANE, but thankfully you will not have to ride in any of this!). We will all meet in the afternoon where your tour leader will give a full briefing of the adventure that lies ahead. More on New Delhi…

Accommodation is in a quality hotel with a pool.

DAY 2: TRAVEL INTO THE HIMALAYAS

Our private bus will pick us up from the hotel at 5am. Don’t worry though – you’ll have a chance to snooze on the smooth roads between Delhi and the foothills of the Himalayas. After lunch we will start the climb into the mountains and you’ll begin to witness the amazing views across the hilltops. Forget what you associate with ‘India’ when you reach Manali (although there are still great curries here!) – it is a calm ski resort style town, with a temperate climate and surrounded by pine tree covered mountains and a fast flowing river. More on Manali…

Accommodation is in a luxury 5* hotel.

Incredible views on our Himalayan motorcycle tours

DAY 3: KULLU VALLEY | 85km

After meeting the rest of our team and our Classic Royal Enfield 500cc motorcycles, we will saddle up for a days riding around the Kullu Valley! Today we will ride on easy, smooth tarmac roads as we accustom ourselves to riding in India. We’ll also have the chance to visit Naggar Castle, Hindu Temples and the hot springs at Vashisht before returing to our hotel in Manali.

Accommodation will be in the same 5* hotel.

DAY 4: MANALI – KEYLONG | 110km

Leaving from Manali, we will ride alongside the Beas river before starting our climb up to our first high pass of the trip: Rohtang La at 3,876m. The roads up to the top are incredible, with countless hairpin turns and spectacular views across the hills. The roads get a little rougher as we decend into the Lehaul Valley, but with its cascading waterfalls and rugged terrain the scenery is no less impressive. Tonights destination is Keylong – the tribal district headquarters.

Accommodation will be in a hotel.

DAY 5: KEYLONG – SARCHU | 115km

We’ll ride smooth tarmac in the morning that curves its way up to the scenic Barachalung La pass which sits at 4,883m… our highest altitude yet. We stop just on the other side for lunch and there are three things that might now happen: 1. Nothing at all; 2. You might feel a bit queezy (no worries – we have oxygen bottles to hand); 3. You might feel a bit drunk and giddy – happy days! Don’t worry though, this is just your body acclimatising to the high altitudes and it does not last long.

After lunch, we will descend to the Sarchu plateau where our campsite awaits. After enjoying a buffet dinner in the ‘restaurant tent’ we will light a bonfire to keep our toes warm!

Accommodation will be in large tents, with attached WCs and big beds.

DAY 6: SARCHU – LEH | 240km

After breakfast we will saddle up for what might well be the most beautiful days riding you’ll ever have experienced (this is certainly the opinion of Toby, one of the Ride Expeditions owners!). We start the day by riding up ‘Gata Loops’ – 21 hairpin turns that snake up the mountainside. Riding towards the Upper Indus Valley and over two more of the World’s highest passes (Lachalung La: 5,085m & Taglang La: 5,330m) the winding roads are an immensely joyous ride and there are fresh breathtaking views around each and every corner. We do have a larger distance to cover today, but the road conditions are excellent and we’re able to increase the pace. We’ll arrive at our hotel in Leh late afternoon.

Accommodation will be in a nice hotel with amazing views.

DAY 7: LEH

Enjoy a day of rest, local sightseeing and exploring the fascintating mountain town of Leh – the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Ladakh. There are plenty of restaurants, shops, cafes and markets – the ‘old market’ in particular is a great experience. There are many monasteries and ancient temples that are well worth a visit, as is the impressive 9-storey abandoned Leh Palace that overlooks the town. If you can not bear to be separated from your steed then you are of course welcome to take the Enfields out for a cruise in the hills. More on Leh…

Accommodation will be in the same hotel.

DAY 8: LEH – ALCHI MONASTERY – LEH | 130km

An easy days cruising today as we take you out for a spot of history and culture… At 1,100 years old, the Alchi Monastery is the oldest monastery in the Ladakh region. The ride out passes by where the Sidhu and the Zanskar rivers join and we’ll also have the chance to stop at the Magnetic Hill – park in the white box, switch the ignition off and let the giant underground magnet do its thing.

More on Alchi Monastery…

DAY 9: LEH – PANGONG TSO | 160km

Riding over Chang La pass at 5,280m we’ll cruise over towards Pangong lake – the highest salt water lake in the world. Watch out for the huge Himalayan Yaks that patrol the valley! The lake, shared by both India and China, is a spectular sight with snow capped mountains and orange rock faces reflecting off of the perfectly clear blue waters. More on Pangong Lake…

Accommodation will be in quality semi-permantent tents. There is a restaurant building heated by a wood burner.

DAY 10: PANGONG TSO – NUBRA VALLEY | 170km

After enjoying breakfast and a couple of cups of chai tea down by the lake, we’ll saddle up for another days fine riding through the mountains. We’ll travel through an increcibly remote region along an old military road that has only recently been opened up to tourists. The smooth road surfaces cruise us down into the beautiful Nubra Valley. More on Nubra Valley…

Accommodation will be in luxurious tents with big beds and attached WCs.

DAY 11: NUBRA VALLEY

The beautiful Nubra beautiful valley is overshadowed by Saser Kangri, which at over 7,672m is one of India’s highest mountains. Having sorted our special ‘inner line permits’ back in Leh, we are free to explore the valley. We’ll visit the Panamik hot springs and search for the endangered double humped bactrian camels in the Hunder desert. We have included for you a ride on one of these majestic beasts… we do not allow racing on the motorcycles but we never said anything about camel racing!

Accommodation is at the same camp site.

DAY 12: NUBRA VALLEY – LEH | 160km

We’ve saved the big one ’til last: Khardung La Pass! Join the elite handful of motorcyclists that have stood on top of the world with their motorcycle by their side. Reputed to be the highest motorable road in the world, Khardung La pass sits at 5,358m above sea level. The views from the top are second to none, looking across Zanskar and the Kangri Mountains. We’ll ride down the other side on rocky dirt roads until we reach our final destination. We’ll enjoy a farewell dinner at the hotel restaurant.

Accommodation will be in a quality hotel.

DAY 13: FLY TO DELHI

After a breakfast feast at the hotel we will transfer you to Leh airport where we will say our goodbyes. Then buckle up for one of the most exciting mountain flights there is. Passing over numerous mountain tops and glaciers, the one and a half hour flight will quickly decend out of the mountains back down to Delhi.

If you intend to stay in Delhi for a night or two just let us know – we’d of course be happy to arrange the same hotel for you.

Useful Info:

  • ALTITUDE: We will obviously be riding at very high altitudes, but we ride the route this way round (low – high) so that your body has a chance to acclimatise. We carry oxygen bottles with us just in case some people start to feel the effects and our doctor / medic will be keeping an eye out for you.
  • TEMPERATURES: During the day it will mostly be quite warm, especially at the lower altitudes. However, when the sun hides behind the clouds at the higher altitudes the temperature will drop dramatically. It is therefore important that you bring thermal riding gear. It also gets quite chilly in the evenings so remember your bobble hat!

  • DOCUMENTATION: You will need to obtain an Indian visa, an international driving permit and appropriate travel insurance. We organise all of the necessary riding permits on your behalf. You just need to ensure that your passport is kept with you when riding the motorcycle as it is often checked when we go through checkpoints.
