With just a short ferry ride from Spain, Morocco is an unrivalled motorcycling playground in North Africa. The colourful Moroccan towns and souks, the Sahara Desert, and the rugged Atlas Mountains separating the coast from the arid desert regions provide a contrasting experience on two wheels.
If you’re all about riding the dunes and crossing the Sahara on dirt, this is paradise. Merzouga is a desert oasis and a basecamp for the big North African rally races, where you’ll get to play Dakar in the massive sand dunes, dusty plains and rocky plateaus, all the while enjoying Moroccan hospitality and cuisine.
For adventures on paved routes, Marrakesh is the gateway into the Sahara and the Atlas Mountains revealing stunning views of the deep gorges, valleys, and red rock formations. The landscapes in Morocco are dotted with small Berber villages and red-walled desert towns boasting a lively culture with French, Andalusian and Berber influences, distinctly North African sights and smells and truly Moroccan vibes, guaranteed to inspire a sense of adventure.
Morocco is a year-round destination, but Northern Africa motorcycle tours usually run in the spring and autumn months to avoid the scorching summer temperatures when the heat in the desert becomes unbearable. While you can expect sunny, warm weather during the day, pack a warmer layer or two for those chilly desert nights – even during summertime, the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara get much cooler at night.
Looking for that ultimate Africa motorcycle tour designed to showcase it all – the scenery, the wildlife and culture? Southern Africa offers the most diverse, awe-inspiring landscapes combined with incredible wildlife sightings along the way.
In South Africa, you’ll get to ride stunning coastal roads, try the traditional South African braai (barbecue) and ride some gnarly off-road trails if you’re looking for dirt and glory.
Lesotho offerS a grand welcome with a ride over the Sani Pass, a rugged, twisty gravel road climbing up a face of a mountain.
in Namibia, you’ll experience just how small we humans really are – out here, the Kalahari and Namib Desert stretch for hundreds of miles with not a living soul in sight, and Namibia’s Mars-like landscapes with undulating orange dunes contrasting against white clay pans and dead tree skeletons will make you feel like you’re traversing a land so wild and remote it barely resembles planet Earth.
Next up is Botswana where the Kalahari Desert meets the lush green Okavango Delta with herds of elephants roaming free and lions congregating around watering holes along with the rest of Africa’s Big Five – the rhino, buffalo, and leopard. Finally, you’ll get a chance to see one of the Seven natural Wonders of the World, the majestic Victoria Falls separating Zimbabwe and Zambia, known locally as “Smoke That Thunders” because of the massive spray and roaring sound the Falls make as the full force of River Zambezi plunges down a chasm in a vertical line.
A Southern Africa motorcycle tour is a incredible experience you’ll never forget, offering so many diverse landscapes, unique cultures, free-roaming wildlife and places off the beaten path you’ll feel like a nineteenth-century explorer discovering this vast and contrasting continent for the first time.
Riding in Southern Africa is a next-level adventure and we’re sure you’ll want to come back here again and again.
For motorcycle touring, Southern Africa is mostly a year-round destination with warm temperatures around the clock. For the best wildlife experiences, the dry season between May and November is ideal as this is when the animals gather around the watering holes, making it much easier to spot them. Coincidentally, the dry season is also the best time to see the Victoria Falls as the lower water level allows for better views (when the water volume is high, the spray often hides the depth of the Falls from view).
Although Morocco is so close to Europe you can see its shores from the Spanish coast, riding here is a thoroughly North African experience. As soon as you leave major cities and towns, the wilderness that is the Sahara Desert and the Atlas Mountains unfold all around you, and the land changes even more as you ride deeper into the countryside. On or off the road, North Africa motorcycle tours are designed to give you a taste of Africa and experience Morocco in the best way imaginable – on two wheels.
Diversity, diversity and more diversity: Southern Africa motorcycle tours are jam-packed with sights and experiences changing on a daily basis, and riding here, you’ll get to face the best of it all. Unique wildlife sightings, contrasting landscapes from deserts to jungles and mountain passes to coastal routes, sweeping tarmac roads and gravel trails, different cultures and ways of life and some of Africa’s most iconic destinations such as the Victoria Falls – our motorcycle tours in Africa promise to wow you with countless extraordinary experiences.
