Mongolia is one of the most wonderful, remote and vast countries we have ever ridden and we simply love it. The possibilities for epic motorcycling are endless.
Swiftly leaving the packed and frenetic capital of Ulaanbaatar behind, our Mongolian motorcycle tours head for the countryside. From sweeping dirt trails that slice across the open plains, to winding tracks that cut through the cool larch forests where your only company is the majestic eagles drifting silently overhead. Mongolia is a country without walls, barriers or fences – it’s just hundreds of square miles of awe-inspiring landscapes and all you have to do is drop the clutch and ride.
Landlocked between China to the south and Russia to the north, this vast country has a population of just three million people, and half of those live in the capital. Once you leave the city streets behind, the entire country is there for you to explore.
Whether you prefer riding big adventure bikes such as the BMW R1250 GS, performance enduro machines like the KTM 450 EXC or the smaller adventure bikes like the Royal Enfield Himalayan… if you’re looking for an incredible ‘off-the-beaten-track’ motorcycle holiday in some of the most stunning & interesting countries on the planet, you’re in the right place. Simply get in touch with us to discuss your preferred motorcycle tour and we’ll take care of the rest, ensuring you have a life changing experience, whichever tour you choose!
We at Ride Expeditions have a passion for doing things right, a passion for motorcycles and a passion for adventure travel. Our tagline - 'The World's Greatest Motorcycle Adventures' - is our mission. It's what we strive to be. It's what we want our riders to experience. We understand the ingredients that make an adventure... it's not only about the bike; it's not only about the routes; it's not only about the destinations. It's a combination of every element of your motorcycle holiday and we pay attention to every detail from start to finish...
While there is a limited road network of very long and very straight roads, our motorcycle tours aim to spend as little time as possible on the blacktop, preferring to head out into the vast landscape on the amazing trails and tracks that cross this beautiful country.
The best thing about riding in Mongolia is the freedom to ride wherever we want… if we want to explore the top of a distant hill, we can branch off and do exactly that. We take on everything from rocky tracks to sandy trails, deep water crossings to flat out blasts across endless plains – epic stuff! If you are serious about your off-road riding, then you seriously need to check out our Mongolian motorcycle tours – it could be the best holiday you ever take.
As we’re keeping off the roads it’s no wonder we’ve chosen the awesome KTM 450 EXC as our weapon of choice for our motorcycle tours in Mongolia – the powerful motor and great suspension being the ideal combination for enjoying the scenery and trails.
Mongolia is a vast and varied country, but with so much of the country not covered by roads then visiting in the summer months is best. We schedule our Mongolia motorcycle tours between early June and late August. At this time of year the days are long & warm and the spring rain has been changed into acres after acre of wonderful green landscapes in every direction with wildflowers in full bloom.
The climate is really mild during the day in summer – Mongolia is on the same longitude as Northern Europe so it’s no real surprise that the weather in summer is pretty much as if you were in Europe. Riding in the day you’ll be comfortable riding in a light jacket or riding shirt if the sun is out. But come night time – particularly in the higher and more remote country – the temperatures drop and you’ll be pleased you packed a jumper and wooly hat!
There is of course always the possibility of a bit of rain even during the summer. This can cause some rather muddy conditions, but as there are so many different tracks and trails that cover the vast steppes, it’s often easy to pick out the easier routes! Anyway – you’re on a KTM. KTM’s eat mud.
Unlike any other place you will have visited, the freedom to ride and roam wherever you want in Mongolia is just incredible. Once you head off the blacktop the whole of the country is open to you. Want to explore the mountain on the horizon? Just drop the clutch and set off! Feel like exploring that distant forest? Turn off the road and ride straight there.
With no fences, borders or boundaries in this enormous landscape the only limits are your imagination, oh and maybe the fuel tank! Good job that all of our motorcycle tours in Mongolia are accompanied by support vehicles!
The culture and history of the Mongolian people is one of the oldest civilisations in the world. Although in recent years many have moved towards the rapidly growing capital city of Ulaanbaatar, there are still vast numbers of Mongolians still living a nomadic lifestyle that their ever-present ancestor Genghis Khan would have recognised and approved.
Rural Mongolian life is still defined by the ubiquitous yurt and tending for livestock, even if some of the horses have been replaced with Chinese motorcycles and Japanese 4 x 4s. What hasn’t changed is the warmth and hospitality of these hardy people. Travelling Mongolia by motorcycle enables us to reach incredibly remote places where the nomadic families will always be happy to invite you into their homes at a moments notice. If they do offer you the favourite tipple of fermented horse milk, be aware it’s a very acquired taste!
More than any other country in the world, Mongolia’s history and indeed its Present and maybe future is defined by just one man. The shadow of Genghis Khan covers every aspect of the country, from the name of the airport to the favourite vodka, the civic buildings and of course the enormous steel statue that dominates the landscape just outside the capital city.
Although Khan was undoubtedly an incredible leader of his people, his story is hardly one of a quiet and uneventful reign. In his 65-year life, Genghis Khan launched hostile and brutal invasions into every neighbouring country, killing millions in the process. His activities across Asia and China went on to establish the vast Mongol Empire, the largest in history.
During our Mongolian motorcycle tours you’ll no doubt be impressed by the sheer volume and range of wild and farmed animals that roam the vast plains. From the herds of goats that flow over the hills like water, to the comical groups of wild camels that roam over the grasslands, their humps swaying from side to side as they move.
Herds of brown, white and black horses that cool themselves from the midday sun in lazy rivers to the lumbering yak that graze the sweet grass across the never-ending vistas.
Above the plains, the constant swopping and gliding of eagles, hawks and vultures adds a certain unease, especially if you stay still for too long!
We’ve never ridden in a country where there is literally nothing to stop you riding anywhere, whenever you want. In a fast developing world with increasing restrictions being put in place, to ride in such open spaces of pristine natural wonder is a very special experience.
From cool larch forests to the open grasslands, the shores of the great lakes to the rocky slopes of the dormant volcanoes… if you can ride it – you can ride it!
This place rocks. Join one of our Mongolian motorcycle tours and we’ll be sure to show you why!
