Honda CR Electric motocross bike – First ride in Japan
After a low profile reveal at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show, the Honda CR Electric prototype motocross bike unexpectedly broke cover in Japan this weekend. With a chassis looking very largely from the existing CRF range and a motor from Honda’s high-tech offshoot company Mugen, it’s an amazingly finished looking product.

HONDA CR ELECTRIC ON the track
Far from a high profile first outing, Honda chose an interval in the racing at the Japanese Motocross Championships to give the bike it’s maiden ride on the dirt. Honda test rider and former Japanese HRC rider and MXoN team member Kazumasa Masuda took to the track in the lunch break, completing some fairly leisurely but impressive short laps laps on the new bike before returning to the start straight and nailing a practice start.
The crew from MFJ captured the action in what is in fairness, not the best of videos, but shows the bike to be a genuine and capable prototype not just a cosmetic mock up. How long before it is available in the showrooms remains an entirely different matter, but it’s the first indication from Honda that they are planning ahead.
