Pillion Friendly?
Yes
Pillion riders are very welcome to join these trips, provided the pilot is an experienced and competent motorcyclist. If you are comfortable having a pillion on the back of your bike, even on gravel roads, you will be fine with this one.
Terrain
30% unpaved
Approximately 70% of this route is paved, and 30% is unpaved. Most of the unpaved roads are in good condition if it has not been raining. There are some sections where the road has loose rocks on the surface. Also, note that "73 Malditos" is more challenging than the average gravel road.
Total Distance KM
3245
This is the total riding distance from start to finish. This is not exact, and the real distance covered may be affected by conditions like border crossings & road closures etc. As this is a self-guided tour - you might find that you explore beyond the planned route distances.
Support
Self-guided and supported
Although this is a self-guided tour, you will have an experienced Ride Expeditions tour leader following along the route. There will be a GPS tracker on your bike as well as in the support truck, a 24-hour on-call doctor, and mechanical and medical equipment, including a satphone in the support truck. All your extra luggage will also be carried by the support vehicle
Airport & Transfers
Arrival: Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport (SCL) to Temuco Araucanรญa Airport (airport code: ZCO) Departure: Presidente Carlos Ibรกรฑez del Campo International Airport (PUQ)
Standard of Accommodation
5 (out of 10)
This is our best effort to provide an average accommodation rating on tour based on various factors and additional amenities. Some accommodation is very nice, and some are rather basic, with limited options. We've hand-picked accommodations that will enhance your experience on this trip. From a selection of hotels and lodges - you'll experience a real taste of Patagonia on this tour.
Difficulty Rating (overall)
7 (out of 10)
This is our best effort to give an average rating for the trip, based on the average rider. This is subjective though, and will vastly depend on your riding experience and ability. It can also vary depending on the weather conditions during your trip, and other things such as road works, road closures/diversions etc. For those with less experience riding adventure bikes with the required technical skills for this tour, you might find this more challenging, increasing the difficulty level for you. If you're in any doubt about your riding ability, or if this difficulty rating concerns you, we strongly recommend you arrange a chat with one of our experienced tour leaders.
Average Daily Ride Hours
6 - 8
Generally, we depart early and aim to arrive at the accommodation by 4pm, stopping for drink/photo stops and lunch along the way. These are not strict times though, and they can vary depending on the conditions at the time, the ability/pace of the group and distance. With the exception of border crossing days where the time can be extended, it is unlikely to spend more than 6 hours in the saddle.

Long Roads and Wide Horizons

Tour Overview

Imagine a place where you can stand beside gushing waterfalls, ride past volcanoes and glaciers and see wildlife that youโ€™d probably only see in National Geographic. This is Patagonia. Surreal, lively, remote, and an escape almost too beautiful to comprehend. A motorcycle adventure thatโ€™s the perfect getaway when you need to get away.

Ride raw and untamed landscapes that zigzag between Chile and Argentina. We ride the famed Ruta 40 and Carretera Austral, each turn revealing vistas that leave you breathless. The marble caves seem to defy nature, while the Perito Moreno glacier stands as a colossal monument to the power of ice.

But Patagonia isn’t just about the scenery. It’s about the moments in between – sharing mate with local gauchos, savouring the rich flavour of Argentinian steak under star-filled skies, and feeling the camaraderie that only comes from facing the elements together.
Standing at the southernmost tip of the Americas, in Ushuaia, aptly named โ€œThe Worldโ€™s Endโ€, you canโ€™t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. And on this self-guided tour, itโ€™s even more apt. You rock up and ride – the ride is yours, minus the difficulties of managing the trip planning.

This isnโ€™t just a motorcycle tour; it is a profound journey to the edge of the world and an opportunity to push your boundaries. For those who answer Patagoniaโ€™s call, it becomes a quest that goes beyond the ordinary with breathtaking views, challenging riding and sensational cultural immersion.

Every time we visit, we canโ€™t help but breathe the words โ€œhe llegadoโ€ (I have arrived).

Self-Guided & Supported.

This is not a guided group tour โ€“ itโ€™s designed for riders who crave freedom, flexibility, and independence. But that doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™re on your own. We provide the motorcycle, arrange all accommodation, prepare the necessary paperwork, and organise motorcycle return transport from your final destination. Youโ€™ll receive detailed GPX routes for each day, plus access to a tour app loaded with fuel stops, recommended eateries, route notes, contacts, and essential travel information.

While you’re out there exploring, a backup vehicle (driven by a first-response medic) follows the route. It carries your luggage, tools, essential spares, and a medical kit โ€“ so you can ride light and stay focused on the road ahead.

Important to Know

Because this isnโ€™t a guided tour, there wonโ€™t be a full-time support team riding alongside you. While the backup vehicle provides limited assistance, you are ultimately responsible for your motorcycle and your navigation. This trip is only suitable for highly competent riders who are confident fixing minor issues like flat tyres and navigating using GPX files.
